Part 2 to our cheat sheet of commonly used terms in web design / web development! Here are ten more terms to get to know as you create your website.

(Do you already know the ten terms in Part 1 of Let’s Talk Web Development?)

  • API (Application Programming Interface)

The software that enables two applications to communicate.

  • Breadcrumb

The breadcrumb shows users their location on a website, displaying the navigation (or trail) of web pages that lead to the current page. The term is in reference to the fairy tale Hansel and Gretel.

  • CSS (Cascading Style Sheets)

CSS specify how HTML elements (such as fonts and colors) are shown. By defining how certain specific elements are displayed, the styles can be carried throughout.

  • iFrame

Short for inline frame, an iFrame is an HTML element within an HTML element (a frame within a frame). For example, an iFrame may be used to embed a video from another website onto your web page.

  • Hover State

  • Information Architecture

  • Mobile-First Design

  • Plug-in

An additional (“add-on”) piece of software code that gets installed on an existing application to add new function to it.

  • Site map

The list of web pages on a website that is essentially a map of the site that shows how to get to each page.
