It is safe to say that a majority of the population these days have some knowledge of what the internet is. Many of us use the internet on a day to day basis for varying needs. To gather information, to complete a task, and to be entertained are only a few of the things we could do over the web. Every time we use the internet, we visit websites to look up and complete what we needed. Examples of websites include google.com, yahoo.com, Youtube.com, wikipedia.org, facebook.com, ebay.com, amazon.com and thousands of others. Have you ever asked yourself how these websites were created? How and why are they are up on the web?

A “website” is defined as a collection of web pages (documents that are accessed through the Internet), such as the one you're looking at now. A web page is what you see on the screen when you type in a web address, click on a link, or put a query in a search engine. A web page can contain any type of information and can include text, color, graphics, animation and sound. When someone provides you their web address, it will basically take you to their website’s home page which will introduce you to what the site can offer in terms of services and information. From a home page, you can click on links that will direct you to other sections of the site that could give you more specific information about the business, for instance. A website could have one page or more depending on the goals of the site owner.

If you have ever wondered why people visit websites, there are two main reasons for that. First, as was mentioned above, to find or access information they need. This reason could be anything. This is applicable to students looking for information for their homework or for a school project. This reason could also be applicable for the general public; if someone wants to know which is the nearest coffee shop or restaurant, he could browse the web to get the information he needs.  The second and main reason people visit websites is to complete a task. This can be applicable for working professionals and to many others, if they need to do something over the web, like send an email or pay a bill.

The process of creating a website is called “web development” or “web dev” in short. Web dev is defined as a broad term for the work involved in developing a web site for the Internet (World Wide Web) or an intranet (a private network). Under web dev, there is what they call web design. Web design governs everything involved with the visual aesthetics and usability of a website—color scheme, layout, information flow, and everything else related to the visual aspects of the UI/UX (user interface and user experience).

The one who does web development is called the “web developer.” According to one website, a web developer is a programmer who creates programs and applications for the World Wide Web. A web developer knows how to build a website from the bottom up: they can create custom code to accommodate your unique needs, developing everything from the site layout to features and functions on the webpage.

The process of web development is tricky and complicated if you do not know anything about it but luckily, if you want to learn more about this or if you want to create your own website, the web has a lot of information to offer which can teach and guide you to have your own website up on the web. Alternatively, if web dev isn’t something else you want the hassle of dealing with, the web can help you find and choose a team capable of completing the task for you.
